whatsoever
thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device,
nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest. Ecclesiastics 9:10
This is the wisdom of a man who’s wisdom the world is yet to see again. In the
scripture he set the tone for a discussion on performance. What it doesn't appear
to be saying is as important as what it is saying. Whiles there is the tendency
to assume that scripture refers only to doing the work of God, we must also
quickly see how the work of God translates into what God has purposed and wills
for us to accomplish. Every activity is a part of the larger life God has
granted us for his purpose. Your life is not exactly yours, God created it so
he can accomplish something specific. Here is what he said to Jeremiah in
Jeremiah 1:6
Before I formed thee, I
knew thee and ordained thee as a prophet unto he nation
For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good
works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.
If we believe as Christians that we were created by God for his purpose, it
should be automatic for us to understand that the glorification of his name is
dependent on the extent to which we serve the purpose. To serve this purpose we
have been blessed (equipped) with the necessary gifts (tools). So that engaging
the world with those gifts is the means by which we can be the best that is
possible for us to be. This must be understood as the will of God and those who
function outside of it must suffer some consequences. When we create something,
we are happy to see it serve the purpose for which we created it. Serving the
purpose in full is the maximization of its existence.
Being the best we can be has two levels i.e. the current occupation and the
larger life. The current occupation and the many other things we do all
contribute to the maximization of the life - serving the purpose. This is
comparable to how seconds help make a day and how an individual help make a
group (family, organization, nations). Whether a day has been maximized or not
is directly dependent on how the seconds have been utilized. Maximized seconds,
minutes and hours ensures a maximized day just as the day influences the making
of a week and a month. A day however has several activities and to say that we
have had a successful day must imply that all the several activities we have
undertaken have been delivered at full power and the purpose of the day has
been served. This is the reason why it is important to decide by prioritization;
how one will know when the day has been maximized even before the say starts. I invite you to the next session of the H O P E M
